Ah Come Fo’ Me Guavaberry Story (Ä Cum Fō Mā Gwävä Bĕrē) - Generations
Translation: I Come For My Guavaberry
Generations of Virgin Islanders brew Guavaberry Wine made from family recipes and stored in large glass bottles known as demijohn. Its unique flavor springs from cinnamon, nutmeg, and other secret ingredients kept within families.
Islanders enjoy this wine typically only during the Christmas season. The wine-filled demijohn is refreshed when guavaberries are available and the bottles of wine are passed on from generation to generation. In this piece the two large demijohns are from Ama’s great-grandmother and grandmother passed on to her parents and now to her.
