Backbone Series - 2023
During the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s , coal women delicately balance 100-pound baskets of coal on their heads, refueling ships docked on St. Thomas’ waterfront. These giftedly strong women supported the physical weight of the coal and mental weight of being the family’s economic backbone. The embodied resilience and wisdom to perceptually abandon a burdensome days’ work to then transition to their natural nature of nurturing and caring for their families.
This woman was the fabric of the community, she is the woman we are today.
