About Us
Welcome to The Creative Native — a gallery born from the heart of the US Virgin Islands, rooted in culture, history, and an unshakeable love for home.
Our Story
The Creative Native was founded by Ama Dennis, a St. Thomas native who left a successful 25-year career as an Electrical Engineer to follow a deeper calling — capturing the soul of the Virgin Islands through photography.
Ama grew up deeply awed by the picturesque beauty of St. Thomas, and the compelling history and dynamic culture that give this region its uniqueness. Over two decades of engineering work took her around the world, where she studied subjects, engaged with local communities, and used photography as a lens to understand unfamiliar places. But the islands always called her back.
In 2017, two devastating Category-5 hurricanes struck the Virgin Islands in close succession, leaving behind massive destruction. In the aftermath — waiting anxiously to hear how loved ones had fared — Ama found herself at a crossroads. Driven by the need for change and a lifelong desire to pursue photography full-time, she wondered if the storms had not inadvertently given her a signal.
After serious soul searching, she gave up her career, picked up her camera, and returned to her muse, her love, her home — the US Virgin Islands.
Our Mission
The Creative Native exists to explore and celebrate the Virgin Islands with intention — visiting familiar places, partaking in cultural events, and discovering hidden gems — all through the eyes of both a native and a curious traveler. The result is a curated, artful photographic collection of our history, diverse cultures, and intoxicating scenic views.
We invite you to partake in this movement of moments through time and immerse yourself in this version of the Virgin Islands story.
