Hassel island was not an island, but a peninsula connected to St. Thomas. Earliest records indicate Hassel Island was named “Estate Orkenhullet”, the Danish name is translated to Hurricane Hole. In the 1860’s the Danish Government separated the peninsula to create better water circulation in the harbor. The US Navy widened channel after the US purchased the Virgin Islands in 1917.
