The roofs were once made of terracotta tile, influenced by European architecture. However, the tile roofs were not suitable for the arid climate and was costly, so over time the roofs were replaced with metal sheathing and painted red to mimic the color of a terracotta tile. The red roofs along the waterfront and nestled in the hills are a delightful contrast to the blue skies and lush green trees.
