Feed Dem Series - 2022
Translation: Feed Them
This image depicts a traditional Virgin Islands breakfast, dumb bread and bush tea.
In the good old days, the children of the community were raised by the village. Oftentimes, people would just drop off their children to an elder’s house when they went to work or ran out on errands. Usually, the elder was a woman the community affectionately considered a grandmother or mother to everyone in the neighborhood. The grandmother’s house was always full of love and children. With a house full of children, they had to “Feed the Chirrun Dem”. Typically, the easiest and fastest thing to make was Dumb Bread, a breakfast staple deeply rooted in Virgin Islands Culinary Art. Dumb Bread is a non-rising, very dense bread, sometimes sweetened with a little coconut, traditionally baked in a brick oven or also steam baked over a covered coal pot, utilizing the “dum” technique of cooking, brought to the Caribbean from East India.
