Guh Night (GuhNīte)
Translation: Good Night
On the St. Thomas Waterfront, lights sparkle like a beautiful jeweled necklace at the base of the mountainous terrain. As it turns dark, the custom is to greet each other and say GuhNite or Good Night. It’s so funny, when Ama lived on the US Mainland and she said Good Night, people would ask her if she was going to bed. Interestingly, Good Night is used as a greeting in Caribbean culture but in some other cultures it is the end of the night and the person is going to sleep.
